Willis office says Trump case unaffected by Fulton County hack

Officials in Fulton County, Georgia, have confirmed that recent cybersecurity attacks in the county do not affect the election destruction case against former President Trump.

Fulton County officials acknowledged Monday that widespread technology failures have affected county government phone lines, the court system, and tax systems such as marriage and firearms permits. County Commissioner Rob Pitts said the outage was the result of a cybersecurity incident, which is currently being investigated by law enforcement.

The county has frequently made national headlines in recent months after District Attorney Fani Willis indicted former President Trump and 18 others on racketeering charges. The defendants are accused of participating in a plot to overturn the 2020 election results in the Peach State in Trump’s favor.

Willis’ office said in a statement that it confirmed the lawsuit has no impact. Shared by Associated Press, “All materials related to election cases are stored on separate, highly secure systems that have not been hacked and are designed to make unauthorized access extremely difficult, if not impossible. .”

However, the prosecutor’s office added that its operations had been “significantly” affected by the outage of electronic court filings, according to the Associated Press.

The District Attorney’s Office said the Atlanta Police Department does not send emails to or open emails from the police department to protect its own systems. The FBI office in Atlanta confirmed it has been in contact with Fulton County officials, but declined to provide further details.

According to the Associated Press, county spokeswoman Jessica Corbitt said officials could not provide an estimate of when the outages would be fixed.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.
