Controversial Prosecutor Fani Willis Faces the Voters in November

Fulton County Prosecutor Fani Willis is up for re-election in 2024, and local voters have the power to remove her from office following corruption allegations.

Willis recently came under fire for having a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the lawyer she hired to help prosecute former President Donald Trump. Willis does not deny her charges, but she said she would respond in court filings.

Mr. Trump and his co-defendant, Michael Roman, argue that the “inappropriate” relationship creates a conflict of interest and is grounds for disqualifying Mr. Willis from the case.

Willis won the Nov. 3, 2020 general election, ousting the longtime former county prosecutor. accused of corruption. She will take office on her January 1, 2021, and her term will end on her December 31, 2024.

Willis hopes to fight the case against Trump in court before the election. Some legal experts doubt the case will be heard before the election, giving voters a chance to oust Willis and potentially end the prosecution.

Efforts are underway to investigate Willis’ conduct outside of the election process. The Georgia Senate on Friday authorized the start of a subpoena investigation into Willis. Investigators do not have the power to fire her, but her hearing could shed light on Willis’ conduct.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was charged in January 2024 with receiving more than $14.6 million in grants from President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) between 2020 and 2023. An investigation into Mr. Willis began on the 12th. It has been suggested that the Justice Department provided federal funds to Willis to fund the prosecution of Mr. Trump.

On Monday, Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill that would re-create a committee to remove Willis from office. Gov. Brian Kemp (R), who opposes opening a criminal investigation against Willis, supports this approach. Kemp denied an appeal by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to dismiss the charges against Trump.
