Collins Reaches Out to Voters in a Tiny Georgia Farming Community Before the Primary

Conservative Group Backs Rep. Mike Collins in Georgia Senate Race

Campaign Stop in Bainbridge: Mike Collins’ Push for Senate

In the quaint downtown of Bainbridge, Georgia, former post office served as the backdrop for Rep. Mike Collins’ appeal to locals, as he campaigned for a Senate seat. A small group gathered early in the morning, eager to hear his message.

This Wednesday marked a stop on Collins’ “Big Rig Roadshow,” part of his campaign trail leading up to the Republican Senate primary on May 19. His grassroots approach is recognized by fellow lawmakers, even amidst a competitive Republican landscape. Polls indicate a solid standing for him despite the heavy competition.

Collins, currently representing Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, faces off against some notable figures, including Gov. Brian Kemp, first-time candidate Derek Dooley, and Congressman Buddy Carter. Notably, this race is about securing the position currently held by Sen. Jon Ossoff, a Democrat considered vulnerable in the upcoming election.

Speaking to constituents, Collins emphasized, “Our mission is to ensure a Republican represents us in that seat, someone who truly aligns with our state’s values.” He stressed the need for the right candidate to secure a victory against Ossoff, characterizing himself as a staunch MAGA Republican and labeling Ossoff as radical, allegedly backed by interests from California and New York.

During his address, Collins highlighted his background as a truck driver and family man while positioning himself as a “main figure conservative.” He shared his legislative wins, including the Laken Riley Act, which he explained aims to address illegal immigration issues, citing a personal tragedy involving one of his constituents.

Collins claimed widespread support for this bill, mentioning that he had discussions with Democrats while promoting it. However, he criticized Ossoff for his inaction regarding the legislation, remarking that Ossoff never contributed to its passage.

He humorously added that he plans to take his “pink slip” to Ossoff’s office post-election, illustrating his determination to make a strong entrance into the Senate if elected.

Local residents voiced concerns during the event, particularly regarding economic issues such as inflation, which they felt disproportionately affect farmers. Bainbridge City Councilwoman Marquita Harris conveyed, “Inflation, especially food prices, is a significant concern for our community.” She noted a desire for practical solutions to navigate rising prices.

Attendee Paul Zoch, a lifelong Georgia resident, expressed his single-minded focus on abortion, stressing the importance of ensuring Planned Parenthood does not receive funding. He shared that many in his circle prioritize pro-life issues, asserting that true freedom cannot exist without safeguarding life.

After the event, Collins mentioned that the economy, particularly the pressures faced by farmers and young people, was a recurring theme in his discussions across Georgia.

“People are tired of being pushed around. They just want a level playing field,” he reflected, touching on regulatory challenges within the agriculture sector.

Collins underscored the lack of opportunities for young people today compared to earlier generations, attributing this to high taxes and regulations that pushed businesses abroad. “All they want is that opportunity,” he stated, reminiscing about buying his first home and starting a business at a young age.

Currently, polling reflects that Collins has a strong lead over his primary opponent Carter, although Ossoff is still slightly ahead overall. If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will occur between the top two contenders.

Former President Trump has publicly supported a different candidate in the gubernatorial race but is yet to make an endorsement in the Senate race, noting he is closely watching the developments.

Trump remarked on the importance of electing a competent senator for Georgia, suggesting that Ossoff does not meet that standard. Overall, the upcoming election is shaping up to be a significant one for all involved.
