Free Palestine demonstrators disrupted a campaign event for Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley in South Carolina on Thursday and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
A small group of protesters disrupted the former governor’s campaign event in Columbia, South Carolina, chanting “Free, Free Palestine,” and some were escorted from the venue. .
Haley’s supporters cheered in her name just before the Republican candidate addressed the crowd, some waving white and red signs that read “Choose Nikki.” There were also members of parliament.
As some people chanted “lock up,” Ms Haley told the crowd not to get excited over the protesters’ actions.
“Don’t ever get mad at those people, because their husbands, service members and service members sacrifice every day for that right,” Haley said.
Haley sometimes confronted pro-Palestinian protesters during her time at the United Nations, but in the 2024 election campaign, protesters were more focused on President Biden. The president has confronted protesters at various election events across the country over his rejection of calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.
Haley, who is trailing former President Donald Trump in the Republican primary, has spent the past week campaigning in her home state after finishing third in the Iowa caucuses and second in the New Hampshire primary. Haley currently trails the former president by 30.8 percentage points in South Carolina, according to The Hill/Decision Desk Headquarters polling average.
