A patient was shot and injured at a Kansas City hospital Friday morning after disarming himself, authorities said.

The patient had just been discharged from University Health Truman Medical Center. Phil DiMartino said in a news release. DiMartino said a confrontation occurred while the guard was escorting the patient, and the patient grabbed the guard’s gun.

The patient then managed to fire one shot, hitting the security guard. Coach DiMartino described the guard’s injuries as not life-threatening.
Other security personnel immediately took the suspect into custody. Police received a call for help around 8:40 a.m.
