Coast Guard fires on vessel trafficking 25 Chinese individuals near Florida

In a recent incident, the U.S. Coast Guard took decisive action off the coast of Florida, opening fire to disable a boat suspected of transporting 25 illegal immigrants from China. This event unfolded on June 10, when the vessel refused to comply with a stop order issued about a mile south of Key Biscayne, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Initially, the Coast Guard crew attempted to halt the boat by firing warning shots, but when that didn’t work, they resorted to “neutralizing shots” which successfully stopped the vessel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.

Following the operation, the Chinese nationals were transferred to the Coast Guard’s Margaret Nobel for processing, and their boat was seized and towed back to the Miami Beach base. Special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from Customs and Border Protection, have now launched a criminal investigation into this attempted entry.

Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Biss shared a stern warning in the aftermath: “This sends a clear message to illegal aliens trying to enter the United States: Don’t even think about it. Our borders are closed, both by land and sea.”

Lt. Matthew Ross, who commands the Miami Beach Coast Guard, emphasized that local, state, and federal maritime law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in combating illegal immigration. He added that those considering dangerous sea voyages should be aware that their lives are at risk, and they may face interception and repatriation.

This enforcement action is part of Operation Vigilant Sentry, a comprehensive strategy involving the Coast Guard and its partners aimed at deterring illegal maritime migration across the Florida Straits and surrounding waters.
