A Maryland man has been arrested for allegedly slashing a loss prevention worker with a knife as he tried to steal items from a Safeway grocery store.
William Fernando Calix, 31, was charged with theft and first-degree assault and released on $10,000 unsecured personal bail. Christian Alexander Gonzalez, 18, was charged with theft in connection with the incident and released from custody.
Montgomery County Police responded to the Safeway in the 10500 block of Connecticut Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday for a report of an armed robbery, police said in a press release.

Calix and Gonzalez entered Safeway and attempted to steal merchandise, but loss prevention personnel confronted them and attempted to take the merchandise. Calix then pulled out a knife and slashed the loss prevention officer in the chest.
The two suspects left the store with the merchandise in their possession.
Officers arrived on scene and interviewed loss prevention personnel and provided a description of the suspect. Officers radioed the suspects and said the two suspects were in the 3300 block of University Blvd. West.

The merchandise was recovered from Calix and Gonzalez, and loss prevention personnel identified them as the suspects.
The loss prevention officer was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
