The Rock makes surprise appearance at WWE, stares down champion Roman Reigns amid WrestleMania speculation

Rumors have long been circulating that WWE icon Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will have a title match at WrestleMania, and Friday night may have been the unofficial announcement.

Roman Reigns is currently the undisputed WWE Universal Champion, having held the title for 1,252 days, or almost three and a half years. Reigns is a distant cousin of The Rock.

Reigns has defended the title at three consecutive WrestleManias and is scheduled to defend it again this April at WrestleMania XL in Philadelphia.

Last week, Cody Rhodes won the Royal Rumble for the second year in a row. His prize was a title match against Reigns at WrestleMania, which he lost last year.

But speculation about The Rock reached new heights yesterday when Rose himself introduced Johnson to the WWE crowd.

After Rock entered the ring, Rose and Johnson shared a long hug before Rose left.

This resulted in Rock and Reigns getting into a staring contest in the center of the ring, ending Friday Night’s “SmackDown.”

Of course, early Cloudpop was off the charts when the legendary “Rocky” came along, but after a stand-off with Raines, the general feeling, though never officially released, was that the long-held fate of Rock vs. Reigns in a title match at Lincoln Financial Field.

And many are not satisfied with it.

After “SmackDown” ended, WWE posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they were looking for fans’ reactions to the end of the show, but most of them were negative.

“P-SSED.. Cody deserves better than to be replaced by a part-timer.” one user wrote.

“Horrible booking at the end. Really bad.” I wrote something else.

And that was the consensus.

WWE has announced that Rock and Reigns will face off in Las Vegas at WrestleMania Kickoff this Thursday.

WWE credits The Rock’s last match as a six-second victory over Erick Rowan in 2016, but that was during his comeback. The last time he wrestled as a member of the WWE roster was when he lost the WWE Championship to John Cena.

The Rock, 51, returned to the ring last September for the first time since 2019. It was her third TV appearance since 2016. Since then, he has bought the XFL, become a director of WWE’s parent company, TKO, and his blockbuster movie career continues to be active.
