Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman anticipated to perform ‘Fast Car’ at 2024 Grammy Awards

Luke Combs has given Tracy Chapman’s 1988 hit “Fast Car” a second life, giving the latest remake a country twist and sending it to the top of the charts.

Chapman has rarely performed publicly since his last tour in 2009, but Variety reports that at the Grammy Awards on February 4, Chapman will once again take the stage to sing “Fast Car” with Combs. reported.

Combs is scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards and is also in the running for Best Country Solo Performance for “Fast Car.” Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, SZA, Dua Lipa, Travis Scott, Billie Elish, Burna Boy, and Olivia Rodrigo will also be performing.

Combs released a cover of “Fast Car” in 2023, which he has performed on his shows for years. The song was a huge hit, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer.

Chapman said in a statement to Billboard in July 2023, “I never thought I’d be on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there.”

“I’m happy for Luke and his success, and grateful that new fans have found and embraced Fast Cars,” she added.

In 2023, after Com released the song, the song won Song of the Year from the Country Music Association. Mr. Chapman was not present to receive it, but he issued a statement expressing his gratitude.

“I’m sorry I can’t be with you all tonight,” Chapman said in a statement upon accepting the song of the year award. “It is truly an honor for my song to be recognized in a new way 35 years after my debut. Thank you to everyone at CMA, and a special thank you to Luke and the fans of Fast Car. .”

The song originally peaked at number 6 on the Hot 100 in 1988.

In 1989, Chapman performed “Fast Car” at the Grammy Awards. That night, she won three awards: Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

Chapman last appeared in front of fans on tour in 2009, but she has retreated from the spotlight even as her ’80s songs have become a cult favorite again. Her most recent public appearance was a performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2020, where she performed “Talkin’ Bout” from her album titled “Tracy Chapman.” He sang “A Revolution.”

In July 2023, cancer patient Cooper Massengill’s Make-A-Wish request was fulfilled by Combs. The 8-year-old boy wanted to meet Combs, and did so during a handshake that preceded his concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The country star took the boy’s wishes to the next level by inviting Massengill onto the stage in front of a packed audience to sing ‘Fast Car’ with him. This video went viral on many social media platforms.

Chapman and Combs sharing the stage will likely be an important and viral moment in “fast car” history. Chapman’s Grammy appearance will not only be the first time he has performed in public since 2020, but it will also be the first time the two singers will share the stage.
