Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) on Monday gave defenders of the Senate’s so-called border bill a much-needed reality check.
One of the bill’s most controversial provisions is the migrant “encounter” standard that would be the basis for border “closure.” Critics of the bill argue that passing the bill would never close the border while allowing countless more immigrants to enter the United States, but defenders say that is false. It is claimed that.
CNN anchor Caitlan Collins asked Roy about the clause in a controversial interview Monday and was quick to correct him when he didn’t give the answer she wanted.
“If this were in place now, wouldn’t the border be closed at this moment based on the number of encounters that trigger the border closure?” Collins asked.
“No. What actually happens is that there’s some kind of setup that happens. de facto –” Collins interjected, and Roy began to speak.
“It will be,” she insisted.
“No. That would be kind of a setup.” de facto It’s standard, right? — normalized around 5,000 [migrants per day]” Roy shot back.
The biggest concern, Roy explained, is that Mexican cartels are “constantly orchestrating this issue.” He cited Eagle Pass as one of the epicenters of the border crisis. The border area has cooled down in recent days after receiving significant media attention. He explained that the situation cooled down because cartels controlling human smuggling routes quickly adapted.
“What happens is the cartels. They look at it and say, ‘Oh, it’s not working there.'” So where do they go now? Arizona and California,” Roy pointed out.
“If you set a bar of 5,000 or so, cartels will say, ‘Oh, I get it. 4,999? I get it,'” he explained.
But Collins refused to accept Roy’s explanation of why immigration thresholds matter and how Mexican cartels exploit them to keep their human smuggling business from stalling.
The CNN host repeatedly told Roy, “If that happens, it will be shut down.”
“It’s going to be 4,999 people,” Roy argued.
Finally, Collins cited Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) and said the authors of the bill disagreed with Roy. But that’s not the whole truth. Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy, who co-authored the bill, acknowledged that the border “will never be completely closed” even if the bill becomes law.
