Newsom sending 120 California Highway Patrol officers to Oakland to crack down on ‘alarming’ crime surge

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday that more than 100 Californians are in Oakland and surrounding areas, which have been plagued by a crime spike that has caused some businesses to close or hire security guards to protect employees. He announced that he would be sending state highway patrol officers to the area.

Operation Law Enforcement Rush will send 120 officers to Oakland and the East Bay to conduct targeted crackdowns on criminal activity such as vehicle theft, retail theft and violent crime, Newsom’s office said in a news release. He said he would work on it.

“While crime rates are decreasing across California, including across the bay in San Francisco, we are seeing the opposite trend in Oakland,” Newsom said in a statement. “What is happening in our beautiful city and surrounding area is alarming and unacceptable. I am sending the California Highway Patrol to do what the hard-working people of Oakland and the East Bay have demanded. We support local efforts to restore the sense of safety that we deserve.”

The effort represents a 900% increase in state law enforcement personnel in these areas, according to the governor’s office.

Crime in Oakland is increasing at a disproportionate rate compared to other urban areas in California, officials said, with violent crime, robbery and vehicle theft expected to increase by 21%, 38% and 45%, respectively, in 2023. pointed out that it would increase.
