A hiker who went missing while mountain climbing in Arizona has been found dead, authorities said Wednesday.
Joseph Reed, 46, was last seen on Picacho Peak around 12 p.m. Tuesday by other hikers in the area, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said. Picacho Peak is located within Picacho Peak State Park, approximately 120 miles southeast of Phoenix.
However, Reed’s car was found the next day in a parking lot near the trailhead, authorities said.
Authorities initially began searching for another man to whom the vehicle was registered, but later discovered that Reed had entered the park using a pass issued to that man, AZFamily reported. Ta.

KPNX-TV reported that authorities believe Reed fell, but the circumstances that led to the fall remain unclear.

According to Arizona State Parks, Picacho Peak was the site of one of the largest conflicts in Arizona between Union and Confederate scouts during the Civil War. The Battle of Picacho Pass occurred on April 15, 1862.
