Biden Remark on Gaza Triggers Anxiety in Israel

President Joe Biden’s comments Thursday that Israel’s response to Hamas terrorism in Gaza has gone “overboard” have left Israelis wondering if Biden is less supportive of their struggle than he once was. , there is widespread unrest within Israel.

Biden made the remarks during a testy exchange with reporters at a press conference in response to special counsel Robert Hur’s assertion that Biden’s memory was failing. (Mr. Huh declined to prosecute Mr. Biden for mishandling classified documents.)

The attention paid to Biden’s remarks by the US media is due to the fact that the president confuses Egypt and Mexico in order to protect his mental acuity. But in Israel, the news, which was the top headline for much of Friday, went “too far.”

Biden said (via) new york times)

You know, I think the implementation of the response in Gaza, the Gaza Strip, is, uh, overreaching. You know, I think Mexican President El Sisi initially didn’t want to open the gates to allow humanitarian supplies to come in. I talked to him. I persuaded him to open the gate. I asked Bibi to open the gate on the Israeli side. I’ve been working really hard to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza. There are many innocent people suffering from hunger. Many innocent people are suffering and losing their lives. And it has to stop.

It was not clear exactly what Biden meant when he described Israel’s actions as “overreach.”

The president’s comments came a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed without evidence that Israel had been “dehumanized.”[ing]” Palestinians. Israelis fear losing U.S. support and worry that Biden could impose a cease-fire agreement that would allow Hamas to arm itself and remain in power, allowing it to attack Israel again as promised.
