Trump backs Sheehy in Montana Senate race

Former President Trump announced on Friday that he is running against businessman Tim Sheehy in the closely watched Senate race in Montana, just hours after Montana Republican Rep. Matt Rosendale filed to enter the primary. I supported it.

Trump called Sheehy an “American hero” and cited support from the Republican Senate campaign arm and its chairman, Montana Sen. Steve Daines, but stopped short of pursuing Rosendale. There wasn’t.

President Trump: “I also respect Matt Rosendale and was willing to support him in the past, and I will continue to support him again if he changes his mind and decides to run for Congress.” I intend to support it.” wrote on his Truth Social platform..

“But in this case, Tim is the candidate currently in the best position to defeat Lazy Jon Tester and restore the Republican majority in the United States Senate…America First Patriot’s Tim Sheehy is completely removed from me. And I have full support!” the former president said.

Rosendale, a member of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, announced Friday that he has filed to run for U.S. Senate in the state, as Republicans prepare to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester. , a fierce primary battle with Mr. Sheehy began.

The congressman gained even more momentum after Trump endorsed Sheehy.

“I love President Trump. But for him to enact Agenda 47, he needs people to actually fight in the U.S. Senate — and that’s me, not Mitch McConnell’s pick, Tim Sheehy. I will win this primary, defeat Jon Tester in November, and together we will make America great again!” Rosendale I wrote to Xformerly Twitter.

Daines criticized Rosendale’s move.

“Rather than build seniority in the House of Representatives for our great state, it is unfortunate that Matt chose to give up his seat and create a divisive primary,” Daines said in a statement.

“Whichever party wins the Montana Senate seat will control the U.S. Senate in 2024. Republicans risk nominating the candidate who handed Jon Tester the biggest victory of his career. We can’t afford that,” Daines said. It is worth noting that Rosendale lost to Tester in the 2018 Senate race.
