Both the pilot and passenger of a small plane that crash-landed in the front yard of a Utah home Saturday afternoon walked away without serious injuries, authorities said.
The Piper Saratoga, a single-engine propeller plane, was landing at the Spanish Fork Airport around 2:30 p.m. when its engine sputtered before completely failing, the city of Spanish Fork said in a news release. The pilot reported hearing the sound. .
”[The pilot] “We attempted to issue a mayday call and return to Spanish Fork Airport, but we did not have the speed or altitude to do so,” city officials said.
The pilot attempted to land in an open area to avoid hitting a power substation, Interstate 15, or nearby structures.

After getting stuck in a power line, the plane skidded across a field and came to rest in the front yard of a house across the street.
A homeowner who was inside at the time told KUTV that he did not hear the plane land outside his window.

“I was inside the house watching TV and all of a sudden the dogs came in. They were acting really weird and jumping on me. So I had to go check on them. “I looked out the window and saw the plane in my front yard,” he told police.

Officials said both male occupants of the plane were able to eject from the plane before crew members arrived on the scene. An update on their status was not immediately provided.

The cause of the engine failure is unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
Officials said the plane was likely a total loss, with estimated damages totaling $350,000.
