White House’s Kirby to get expanded role

John Kirby, who became a fixture at news conferences amid Russia’s war in Ukraine and fighting between Israel and Hamas, has an expanded role in the White House.

Kirby has been promoted from deputy assistant to the president to chief of staff, and his new title will be White House national security communications adviser, a White House official said.

“Admiral Kirby’s decades of high-level national security experience and clear strategic acumen make him an invaluable communicator and advisor to this team,” Anita Dunn, senior adviser to the president, said in a statement. ”. “President Biden is proud that John is leading the coordination of national security messaging across his administration as our nation continues to vigorously advocate for our national security interests at home and abroad.”

Kirby joined the white house In May 2022, he will assume a communications role through the National Security Council. In recent months, he and press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre have attended nearly daily White House press briefings, answering questions about foreign policy issues and providing updates on Ukraine. In his new role, Kirby will coordinate national security officials across White House agencies. Officials said he will manage a small staff and will continue to be present in the briefing room.

Kirby’s promotion does not affect Jean-Pierre’s role.

He served as the Pentagon’s chief press secretary before moving to the White House. He also served as a spokesperson for the State Department and the Navy.
