Democratic strategist James Carville acknowledged Saturday that President Joe Biden’s refusal to meet for the Super Bowl was a clear “sign.”
Biden has sat in on interviews aired before the Super Bowl for the first two years of his presidency, a tradition that began in earnest with Barack Obama in 2009. Last year, Mr. Biden refused an interview over what was widely believed to be a disdain. Fox is the network that broadcasts the Super Bowl. But this year, when CBS aired the event, Biden still declined to be interviewed.
The White House and Biden campaign justified the decision by arguing that Americans don’t want politics and sports mixed together. But Carville doesn’t buy that excuse.
“You have the opportunity to be interviewed for 20 to 25 minutes that day, even though you’re not even close to the biggest audience on television, and you don’t do it,” Carville said.
“That’s kind of a sign that your staff and yourself don’t have a lot of confidence in you. There’s no other way than to read this,” he acknowledged, noting that Biden had said: I don’t even want to discuss it Donald Trump before voting day.
“He’s old. I’m about the same age as him, so I know what it is. And it never gets better,” Carville added. “Today is the youngest day of your life.”
The decision to skip the Super Bowl interview, whether the excuse was justified or not, only fueled concerns that Biden’s cognitive decline was accelerating.
To make matters worse, Biden refused interviews all week when he twice claimed to have spoken to deceased world leaders, when he forgot the name of Hamas, and when Special Counsel Robert Hur That was when the report was released. This is how I would rate Biden: “An old man with a bad memory.”
So it’s no wonder why More than three-quarters of voters and 86% of all American adults There are concerns about the age of the 81-year-old commander-in-chief.
Carville has been warning Democrats about Biden’s political vulnerabilities. But in his interview with CNN, Carville never suggested that Biden should step down.
But Carville said it was “not too late” to find a replacement.
