Philadelphia apartment blast seriously injures 1

At least one person was seriously injured in an explosion inside a Philadelphia apartment building early Monday, according to published reports, but authorities declined to provide further details.

The explosion occurred around 12:30 a.m., and city and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officials responded to the scene and remained at the scene for several hours.

Philadelphia Police Department referred questions regarding this matter to the ATF. ATF spokesman Alan Gilmore confirmed that the agency is providing assistance to Philadelphia police, but called reports of the explosion and injuries an “active and ongoing investigation.” He declined to provide further details.

A Philadelphia television station reported that a man in the apartment was hospitalized with serious hand injuries, but no further details were available. No other injuries were reported, but the building was temporarily evacuated as a precaution while authorities investigated.
