The PGA Tour’s longshot winning streak continued with Nick Taylor’s win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last week.
Taylor, who won by +15,000 points, became the sixth consecutive winner on tour with triple-digit odds.
The PGA Tour concludes its West Coast excitement this week with the 2024 Genesis Invitational at Riviera.
The biggest story of this tournament will be Tiger Woods playing, and we’re confident he’ll get a lot of betting support at 150/1 on FanDuel, but the field is too deep for the big cats to compete. It seems too much.
Scotty Scheffler, who finished T3 in Waste Management, is the clear consensus betting favorite at +650.
Scheffler is the only one in single digits, but there’s a lot of star power in the next spot.
Rory McIlroy is +1000, Viktor Hovland is +1400, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas are +1600, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay are +1800, and Ludwig Aberg and Max Homa are +200.
It takes a special effort for a long-odds player to upset this kind of field, but there are several golfers who are making waves on the Riviera this week.
2024 Genesis Invitational Player Selection
Jason Day (+5500, FanDuel): It’s not uncommon for punters to miss a player (even a player in decent form) just because he didn’t play the previous week. That seems to be happening with Jason Day as well, who hasn’t done anything to warrant a spot on the betting board. Day had a T6 finish in his last start (at Pebble Beach) and has two top-10 finishes in four starts in 2024. The Australian had mixed results in his three starts at Riviera, but finished ninth in 2023.
Do you want to bet on golf?
Hideki Matsuyama (+8000, FanDuel): I can’t stop betting on Hideki Matsuyama at this price, but he didn’t do anything to push me away either. Granted, Matsuyama hasn’t popped in a while, but he’s coming out of T22 with Waste Management and clearly headed for a course that suits his game. The Japanese player did not qualify for Riviera in 2023, but he has finished 11th or higher in four of his eight appearances at Riviera. We know Matsuyama can put his game together and win on a field like this, so this number is definitely playable.
Denny McCarthy (+10000, FanDuel): Like Matsuyama, Denny McCarthy is also playing decently, but not enough to make him a trending pick. In this case, that’s good news because it allows his price to hover around triple digits. McCarthy, one of the best putters on the planet, just had his T22 finish at TPC Scottsdale, his third consecutive finish from 22nd to his 26th. McCarthy has competed in the event four times, missing out twice, but finished T14 last year.
