After a week of floor debate and four months of back and forth, the Senate debated through the night. passed it $95 billion Ukraine-Israel funding bill.
why did it happen overnight: Conservative opponents filibustered through the night, but ran out of steam around 5 a.m.
final vote : The funding bill passed 70-29. 22 Republicans voted to pass the bill, and 2 Democrats (senators) voted to pass it. jeff markley (Me.) and peter welch (Vermont) — Voted no. Sen. Bernie Sanders(I-Vt.) also voted against it, citing concerns about supporting Israeli military operations in Gaza.
22 Republicans voted for the Ukraine package
💰 What’s on my bill?: $60 billion to Ukraine. $14 billion in security assistance to Israel. $9 billion in humanitarian aid to Gaza, the West Bank, and Ukraine. $4.8 billion for the Indo-Pacific and $2.4 billion for the U.S. military to defend against Iranian-backed Houthi attacks.
💡 Why some Senate Republicans opposed the bill : Because it didn’t include policy changes to secure our borders. And before you ask the next obvious question, *yes* Senate Republicans killed a version of the bill that included border security changes last week. Importantly, the politics have changed in recent months, and passing border legislation appears to be more difficult among Republicans. Funding for Ukraine is also controversial within the Republican Party, further complicating the debate.

The bill heads to the House of Representatives, where it faces an even more difficult path.speaker microphone johnson(R-Louisiana) has declared the bill “void on arrival” and is threatening not to bring it to the House floor for a vote.
💻 Watch House proceedings live
However, senators expect the bill to pass easily given the momentum in the Senate.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement Monday night.:”[In] Unless we receive any changes to border policy from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work on these important issues on its own. America deserves better than the current situation in the Senate. ”
If Johnson blocks the bill, will it die?: Not necessarily. There is a legislative loophole – called a discharge petition – that allows Johnson to get around it. The bill would need 218 signatures from the House of Commons to bypass Johnson and bring it to a vote.
^ Politics here: It would be a major blow to Johnson’s leadership if lawmakers push him aside and bring the bill to the floor without him. But the move would also keep Mr Johnson’s fingerprints off the bill, potentially helping him among conservatives and former Conservatives. president trump .
