Texas man who was sleeping in his truck after a fight with his girlfriend shoots and kills car robber with AR-15, police say

Texas State Police say a man sleeping in his truck was found shot dead A carjacking suspect with an AR-15 rifle was arrested Tuesday morning in northeast Houston.

Police said the man was asleep in his four-door truck when a burglary suspect broke into his car, which was parked outside an apartment complex on Parramatta Lane, around 3am.

“When I woke up, there was a strange person in the truck. He grabbed a gun and shot me multiple times,” said Sgt. Ben Beale. He added that the dark tinted windows made it difficult to see the sleeping man clearly.

Originally Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez Said The robbery suspect may have been in possession of a handgun. Police later determined he had a Glock pistol in his pocket.

“They shouldn’t have done that in the first place,” Beal added. “I don’t think he realized that the reporter was sleeping in this truck before it was too late.”

Gonzalez said the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The owner of the truck went to his brother’s apartment to report the incident to the police.

Investigators said the suspect had already stolen other vehicles before the fatal crash. They were able to locate a large screwdriver that they believed he used to break into the car. He was only described as being in his early 20s.

KTRK-TV reported that the case will be referred to a grand jury for possible charges.
