Rangers trying to break power-play funk after lineup change didn’t work

Despite the talent and precision that propelled the unit to No. 1 overall rankings earlier this season, and even though the team is currently on a five-game winning streak, Peter Laviolette has helped the Rangers solve a suddenly ineffective power play. I understand what I need to do.

And he fully believes they will.

The Rangers are currently in a 17-0 rut and hold the man advantage heading into Thursday’s home game against the Canadiens.

He hasn’t scored a power play goal in seven games since Jan. 21 against Anaheim, and his overall scoring percentage has dropped to 25.6 percent, which ranks fifth in the NHL from 28.7 percent before his recent slowdown.

“I think stretching is always challenging and always a topic of discussion. All I can say is that I have tremendous confidence in the players that are on the ice,” Laviolette said Wednesday at Tarrytown. He spoke after practice. “Like anything, there’s something about funk that keeps going. Our job is to understand that funk.

“And I have tremendous faith that they will do that. They are talented players and have been together for a long time, so we have to work to resolve this issue. It won’t.”

Laviolette disbanded its perennially top power play unit in a 2-0 win over the Flames on Monday, but late in the game, players such as Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck were released. The quintet was reunited.

Kreider was excused for personal reasons, but four of them practiced together on Wednesday in 5-on-4 and 4-on-3 drills.

“I think the players who got us to the numbers you’re talking about are the players who should be out there. But we also need something to happen,” Laviolette said. “So we might look at it and say let’s make some changes for the game and see what happens, but those are the players that should be on the ice to make a difference.

“They’ve had great success. They’ve had success for us this year. We’ve got to get them back on track.”

Trocheck, who represented the Rangers in the All-Star Game along with goaltender Igor Shesterkin, tied for the team lead in power-play goals with Panarin and Kreider with nine, followed by Zibanejad’s seven. .

Fox, a 2021 Norris Trophy winner and defenseman, has three goals and 17 assists, but no other player on the roster has scored more goals than Alexis Lafreniere’s two goals in man-up situations.

“Sometimes the puck goes in the net, sometimes it doesn’t,” Trocheck said. “At the beginning of the year, there were not many chances coming in, but there are a lot of opportunities not coming in.

“I think you just don’t worry about or avoid questions like this. The more you focus on it, the more it eats away at you or the harder you grip the stick. Power Play It’s always times like this when we’re not scoring on the field and worrying about scoring on the power play and concentrating on different things when in reality what we’re doing usually works. So we have to stick to it.”

The last time the Blueshirts faced the Canadiens, they lost 4-3 in a penalty shootout early on Jan. 6 in Montreal with the team sliding to 5-7-2.

However, the Rangers sparked their current winning streak with a 7-2 road win over the Senators in their final game the month before the All-Star break, outscoring their opponents 18-7 despite being underpowered. performance.

“It wasn’t a great month for us and that’s why that game [in Montreal] “Obviously it didn’t go the way we wanted it to on the scoreboard,” Laviolette said. “A lot of good things happened in the game, goaltender.” [veteran backup Jonathan Quick] We played quite a game that night, but we came in close. This is your chance to correct your mistakes.
