Pete Alonso, Mets haven’t had long-term contract talks yet

Pete Alonso expressed his desire to remain a Met for life on Saturday afternoon, but the two sides have not yet held talks to make that happen.

Alonso told reporters in Port St. Lucie, Fla., after taking live batting practice that he has not yet had any discussions with the Mets about a long-term contract.

Alonso said the focus was on avoiding arbitration, which he signed this offseason to a one-year, $20.5 million deal.

“Obviously, we welcomed the conversation,” Alonso told reporters this offseason. “The only conversation we had was about a one-year contract.”

Alonso, 29, was asked about his desire to play with the Mets long-term and answered in the affirmative, but added that he couldn’t say for sure what would happen.

“I definitely envisioned myself being at the Met my whole life. That’s definitely something I thought about,” he said. “I love New York. It’s a really special place for me and my family. … I definitely welcome the idea, but I can’t predict the future. And for me, I’m just focused on this season.” I would like to.”

Alonso added that he is open to discussing a new contract during the season.

This season brings a lot of question marks, not just for Alonso, but for the Mets as a whole. The Mets finished with 75 wins last year and traded away many players, including high-priced pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.

Alonso, who hit 46 home runs a season ago, said he hasn’t given much thought to the possibility of being traded this year if the Mets underperform again in 2024.

“It’s a lot to think about,” he said. “I just took my first raw blood pressure.”
