Forum member Laxer said their Cybertruck started showing noticeable rust just two days after being exposed to the rain. They claim they were warned by Tesla staff upon pick-up that rain could cause rust and that they would need to be polished. Another owner, Vertigo3pc, brought his Cybertruck to his service center after discovering similar corrosion after the Los Angeles rains. Staff are aware of the problem and say they can repair the damage. Both owners posted photos online that show orange rust marks speckled across the Cybertruck’s body panels.
Stainless steel has a tendency to rust under certain conditions, especially when exposed to water over time. According to his Cyber truck owner’s manual page posted online, the exterior does not have a protective clear coat finish to prevent corrosion. The manual warns owners to promptly remove materials such as rain, grease, and bird droppings to avoid damage to the exterior.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously suggested that Tesla could offer an optional tungsten carbide coating to further improve scratch and corrosion resistance. However, the company has not confirmed whether or when this will be available. For now, new Cybertruck owners may need to be diligent about cleaning and drying their vehicles after wet weather to prevent rust.
The minor cosmetic issue highlights one of the potential drawbacks of the Cybertruck’s unpainted stainless steel body compared to traditional automotive steel and aluminum, but rust concerns may be a problem for new owners. It remains to be seen whether it is widespread. Tesla has not yet responded to requests for comment from the media about the reported rust issue, as early Cybertrucks have just begun reaching customers.
