California Democrat laments what Suozzi victory means for the party’s immigration stance: ‘Piñata’ issue

Some California Democrats are concerned about what Tom Suozzi’s victory in New York, where he advocates for tougher border enforcement, will mean for the party’s immigration policies.

“The good thing about Suozzi’s win is that Suozzi won. The bad thing about Suozzi’s win is that Suozzi won,” said Rep. Lou Correa, D-Calif. he told the Los Angeles Times. “He doubled down on immigration.”

“Maybe that’s the winning formula, but right now it’s not good for immigrants to become a piñata where everyone slams them down,” he said.

Correa said there are many Latinos in his district who wonder why so many people are allowed into the country when people who have been in the U.S. for years can’t get work permits. He said he was there.

Suozzi wins New York’s critical special legislative election, Democrats flip seats

“You can’t sit there and explain to people… you have to come up with a slogan. Will the slogan be ‘kick them all out’? That’s our challenge,” he told the media.

During the campaign, Suozzi debated Republican Maj Pilip and said he supported long-term immigration solutions.

“The solution being proposed in the U.S. Senate would actually build more walls, hire more Border Patrol agents, deal with asylum seekers, amend laws to improve conditions, and provide funding to New York state. “And New York City needs to address the immigration crisis we’re facing right now,” Suozzi said.

Suozzi’s campaign ad also promised to “secure our borders and celebrate ICE as a vital agency.” According to Politico.

“We have to be very careful,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I’m never going to outsmart the Republicans.”

“The truth is, I don’t think that necessarily applies to other parts of the country,” Ocasio-Cortez told Politico.
