Major US labor strikes hit 23-year high in 2023

If it looks like unions in the United States went on strike more in 2023 than in previous years, that’s because they did.

The Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported Wednesday that the number of major work stoppages nationwide reached 33 last year, double the 20-year average and the highest since 2000, when there were 39.

The agency defines a major work stoppage as one involving 1,000 or more workers and lasting at least one shift during weekday work hours, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. In total, more than 450,000 workers were affected by large-scale work stoppages in 2023, the BLS said.

Several high-profile strikes made headlines last year, with employees leaving the company to demand higher wages and benefits.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) has launched simultaneous targeted strikes against Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. The largest health worker strike in U.S. history occurred in October. 75,000 Kaiser Permanente union employees A three-day strike on picket lines affected hospitals in multiple states. Although unions held a flurry of strike action in 2023 and increased the role of union members, the percentage of organized workers in the United States hit an all-time low for the second year in a row.

Union leaders are trying to reverse this trend.

Also on Wednesday, the UAW announced that it would encourage more auto and battery workers to unionize in 2026, aiming to capitalize on what it sees as “growing organizing momentum across the nonunion auto sector.” The company announced that it will invest $40 million by 2020.
