Jayo Archer, X Games medalist and motocross rider, dead at 27

Two-time X Games medal-winning Australian motocross rider Jayo Archer died Wednesday at the age of 27 while practicing a triple backflip trick in Australia.

Nitro Circus, an extreme sports organization led by Travis Pastrana, confirmed Archer’s death in an Instagram post.

“The Nitro Circus family mourns the loss of Jayo Archer,” the group wrote.

“Jayyo was the epitome of passion, hard work and determination. He pushed what was possible on dirt bikes to heights never seen before. He had a positive impact on those around him. Most of all, he was a wonderful human being and a friend to all of us.”

“Our thoughts and love go out to Jayo’s family and friends. … We love you. Ride in peace.”

At age 15, Archer was the youngest athlete to land a backflip over 75 feet on a motorcycle. He was also the first motocross rider to land a triple backflip at the Nitro World Games tournament in November 2022.

According to Australian media, Archer was scheduled to attempt the world’s first quadruple backflip later this year.

“This really hit home,” Pastrana told ESPN. “Jayyo grew up in an era where action sports were the biggest thing, and he always wanted to do big moves like doubles and triples, even though there weren’t many places to do them.

“He would wake up at 4 a.m. every morning and go to the gym before work so he could ride his dirt bike. When he came to Maryland to train, he stayed at my house and “He was an incredible role model for my children. He was a great human being first, a hard worker second, and a bad mother third. . ”
