Former President Donald Trump lost his bid Thursday to delay a New York court ruling ordering him to collect $355 million and ban him from doing business in the state for three years.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron said Mr. Trump’s lawyers have not provided a good reason why the verdict should be delayed from last week in the civil fraud case against former President Trump, the Trump Organization and others.
“You have failed to explain, much less justify, the basis for your stay,” Engoron wrote in an email filed Thursday in the lawsuit. “I am confident that the Appellate Division will protect your appellate rights.
On Tuesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James’s office, which prosecuted the case against the real estate mogul, filed a proposed sentencing order with the court based on Friday’s Engoron decision.
But Trump’s lawyer, Clifford Roberts, responded Wednesday, arguing that the AG’s office did not follow proper court procedures and that there were errors in the proposed ruling.
He also argued that the defense should be given time to submit a “proposed counterclaim.”
Engoron signed the judgment Thursday.
It will then be signed by a court clerk, after which Trump and his co-defendants, including his two eldest sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr., will have 30 days to appeal.
Trump’s allies have said they intend to contest the Engoron ruling.
The 2024 Republican presidential front-runner has insisted he did nothing wrong and has denounced the incident as a politically motivated “witch hunt,” but is unable to file an appeal. , must surrender $355 million and 9% interest as collateral.
Mr. James said he was prepared to seize Mr. Trump’s assets, including his most valuable Big Apple real estate, to cover the costs if Mr. Trump could not come up with the cash he was ordered to pay.
