A military helicopter crashed into a wooded area Friday while on a training mission in Mississippi.
The Mississippi National Guard’s AH-64 Apache crashed off Highway 30 near Booneville, Prentice County, about 115 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, around 2 p.m., authorities confirmed.
The National Guard said the helicopter was flying a routine training mission at the time of the crash.
It is unclear at this time how many people were on board the helicopter and “no casualties have been confirmed at this time,” the National Guard said in a statement.
He added, “Please keep the Mississippi National Guard and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
The newspaper contacted local authorities and the Department of Defense for additional information.
The accident occurred just weeks after five Marines were killed in a helicopter crash during a storm in Southern California.
The Marines were returning from Creech Air Force Base outside Las Vegas to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego as California experienced record rainfall and snow, making flight conditions dangerous and unstable.
Sergeant Alec Langen, 23, Lance Corporal. Capt. Donovan Davis, 21, Capt. Jack Casey, 26, Capt. Benjamin Moulton, 27, and Capt. Miguel Nava, 28, all died.
In another military tragedy just over three months ago, five Army special operations soldiers were killed when their helicopter crashed in the Mediterranean Sea during an aerial refueling exercise.
