The Miami Dolphins parted ways with defensive coordinator Josh Boyer shortly after the 2022 season. In February 2023, longtime NFL coach Vic Fangio was hired to replace Boyer.
Fangio is credited with helping develop the two-deep safety look that teams have used to counter strong passing attacks over the past few years.
Miami’s defense averaged 318.3 yards per game under Fangio and finished the regular season ranked 10th in total defense.
After what some saw as a successful first season, Fangio and the Dolphins parted ways last month. The 65-year-old was later named the Eagles’ defensive coordinator.

Earlier this week, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Dolphins told star defensive back Xavien Howard that he would be released at the beginning of the league’s new year.
Jalen Ramsey, a seven-time Pro Bowler and Howard’s defensive backfield mate, wasn’t happy with Howard’s pending departure.
Ramsey took Social media In order to express his feelings, he apparently attacked Fangio in the process.
“We will never forgive a guy who didn’t take full advantage of our skill set!” Ramsey said on X (formerly Twitter).
The Dolphins’ defensive philosophy certainly seemed to change under Fangio. Last season, the team primarily used zone coverage, but in the years leading up to Fangio’s arrival, more than 45% of the Dolphins’ defensive plays were in man coverage.

Ramsey seems to think a plan that focused more on men’s coverage could have better highlighted his and Howard’s skills.
Ramsey is the newest player on the Dolphins roster to clearly take aim at Fangio since his departure was announced.

Longtime NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represented several Dolphins players last season, said there were “quite a few” players who didn’t like Fangio’s coaching style.
“There were quite a few players on the team that didn’t necessarily get along with Fangio, so he didn’t have a great relationship with a lot of players,” Rosenhaus told WSVN-TV. “There were some men who loved him, but there were quite a few who didn’t.”
