Fans evacuate Indiana-Wisconsin game after fire alarm goes off

Tuesday’s Big Ten game between Wisconsin and Indiana suffered a rather bizarre delay Tuesday night.

With about 10 minutes left in the game and each team tied at 54 points, everyone in the Indiana Statehouse Hall was suddenly forced to evacuate the building.

With about 10:06 left, the fire alarm on the balcony of the venue went off.

There was much speculation about the initial delay, but due to continued bad weather in the area; Wisconsin State Announcer Matt LePay Smoke was generated in the elevator and an alarm sounded.

Indiana University did not say what caused the fire alarm to go off, but the evacuation was in accordance with state law.

“It turned out that the fire alarm went off on the balcony.” the university said. “Emergency management personnel stationed at the Simon Skyot Capitol Command Center, in accordance with state law, evacuated the arena to protect the safety and health of all attendees. Once it was determined that there was no immediate threat, all personnel were evacuated from the building. allowed to return.”

The evacuation lasted approximately 11 minutes, and play resumed after the teams warmed up for approximately five minutes.

Maybe the Hoosiers needed a fire alarm. They led by as many as 15 points in the first half but squandered that lead.

In fact, the fire alarm went off just after Wisconsin’s John Blackwell made back-to-back layups to tie the score. It was the first time since the Badgers went 0-0 that they weren’t behind in a game.

After the game restarted, Wisconsin held a three-point lead with 5:54 remaining, but the Hoosiers went on a 14-7 run to win 74-70. Wisconsin missed its final six shots of the game. .
