A Mississippi father and son discovered a dead body inside an abandoned house while treasure hunting last Saturday.
Riley Bryant, 23, her father Chuck, and some friends were metal detecting around a dilapidated property in Holly Springs, Michigan, 80 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. When they looked inside the building, they discovered a dead body.
“I actually looked through the window of the vacant building and noticed something strange on the floor in the back room,” Bryant said. he told WREG.
Bryant has previously discovered rare items such as Civil War-era bullets, an 1880s glass bottle from the J.J. Henrik Bottling Company, and an old oar lock from a rowboat, but he has also discovered human remains in an abandoned house. I was shocked to find it.
“We thought, ‘This is strange,’ and decided we definitely needed to report it to the authorities,” he added.
Bryant believes the unlucky person had taken shelter from the cold but did not survive.
“He was trying to keep warm by taking things from the house and putting curtains, towels, whatever he could find on top of himself,” he said. “When you actually look at it, it gets even sadder. This wasn’t someone who was wandering around drunk. This was someone who clearly wanted to live.”
Treasure hunters remained at the scene while local police investigated the mysterious death.
“I waited until they removed the body and left the scene. I was there the whole time. It took about two hours,” Riley Bryant said. “I’ve never seen anything like it before. Some kind of realization sank in that it meant someone had died.”
The identity and gender of the body have not been determined.
The body was transported to Pearl, Michigan, for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, WREG reported, citing the Marshall County coroner.
Chuck Bryant turned this ordeal into a learning experience, telling people to be wary of others and help those less fortunate.
“We had some conversations on the way home and continued to talk about trying to dismantle the whole thing and learn from it,” the elder Bryant said. “Try to be a better person. Be careful because there may be people around you who are in trouble.”
A Long Island schoolgirl who was walking to school with friends discovered a severed human arm on a road in Babylon, New York, on Thursday.
The gruesome discovery led police to find a foot “protruding from a pile of leaves” on Graham Place between Beverly Road and Martin Place, about a mile from where it was first discovered, officials said. It is said that he did.
Officials said human remains had not been there for that long.
