Iris ApfelThe fashion celebrity and icon known for her eccentric style has passed away. She was 102 years old.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Apfel’s attorney, Lori Sale, confirmed her death to The Associated Press. Her death was also announced on her Instagram page, which had nearly 3 million followers.
“Iris Burrell Apfel. August 29, 1921 to March 1, 2024,” the social media post read.

She reportedly died at her home in Palm Beach, Florida.
Born August 29, 1921, Apfel was known for his irreverent attitude. eye-catching costumes, a combination of haute couture and oversized costume jewelry. For example, the classic Apfel look combines a feather boa with a jacket embellished with chunky bead strands, bangles, and Native American beadwork.
With her large, round, black-rimmed glasses, bright red lipstick, and short white hair, she stood out at every fashion show she attended.
“I’m not pretty and I’ll never be pretty, but that doesn’t matter,” she once said. “I have something better. I have style.”

Apfel amassed such a large collection of clothing and accessories that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York decided to hold an exhibition of her wardrobe. The exhibition, which opened in 2005, is titled “Lara Avis: Selection from the Iris Apfel Collection.”
Apfel was an expert in textiles and antique fabrics. She and her husband Carl ran a textile manufacturing company, Old World Weavers, and specialized in restoration work, including projects in the White House under six different U.S. presidents.

Her celebrity clients included Estée Lauder and Greta Garbo.
In his later years, Apfel appeared in an advertisement For brands like MAC Cosmetics and Kate Spade.
She’s also designed a line of accessories and jewelry for Home Shopping Network, collaborated with H&M on a brightly colored apparel, jewelry, and footwear collection that sold out within minutes, and created a makeup line with Ciaté London.
