Former baseball player Steve Garvey defeated Rep. Adam Schiff (Democratic) in the California Senate race ahead of the March 5 primary, according to a poll by the University of California, Berkeley Institute of Government. standing on top.
But the news isn’t necessarily good for Republicans. If Garvey finishes in the top two spots along with Schiff in the primary, it would likely mean that Schiff will be the next senator, as Democrats have an overwhelming advantage in the state.
The poll, conducted online between February 22 and February 27 among thousands of registered voters, has a 95% confidence level and a 2% margin of error. That said, Garvey has him at 27%, ahead of Schiff’s 25% (statistically tied for first). Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) received 19% of the vote, and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) received 8%, making the race look like a runoff between Garvey and Schiff. It shows.

The state ran full-page ads attacking Garvey for voting for Trump and supporting other conservative policies, rallying Republican voters to Garvey while also rallying Democrats to Schiff.
Schiff is best known for falsely accusing Trump of “collusion” with Russia in 2019 and 2020 and leading the effort to impeach him.
