Beto O’Rourke claims Texas city safer because of immigrants after Trump’s visit

Former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke on Sunday rebuked former President Donald Trump, claiming that El Paso, Texas, is one of the safest cities in the nation because it is an “immigrant city.”

“My hometown of El Paso, Texas, is consistently one of the safest cities in America, if not the safest city in America,” O’Rourke said on MSNBC’s “Inside With.” He spoke during a guest appearance on Jen Psaki.

“And that’s not despite the fact that we’re a city of immigrants. I would argue that it’s because we are a city of immigrants.”

The comments came after President Trump visited El Paso last week while President Joe Biden made a personal visit to the border in Brownsville, about 525 miles away.

President Trump has slammed the border crisis, likening the ordeal to a “war,” harping on the flood of migrants crossing the border and shifting blame onto the Biden administration.

“This is Biden’s invasion over the last three years,” Trump said. “I call him Crooked Joe because he’s crooked. He’s a terrible president, the worst president in the history of our country.”

O’Rourke, who represented Texas’ 16th Congressional District, which includes much of El Paso, from 2013 to 2019, argued that immigrants are central to America’s success.

“We are a nation of immigrants. We are the strongest, most successful place on earth. And that has a lot to do with people coming here from all over the world to better themselves.” ,” O’Rourke said.

“If we are to remain the most successful nation on earth, we need more immigrants.”

Critics of Biden’s border policies say the influx of illegal immigrants and asylum-seeking migrants is overburdening U.S. government agencies.
