Will Texas Panhandle wildfire affect beef prices expert says

Wildfires have devastated the Texas Panhandle, destroying hundreds of homes, more than a million acres of land, and thousands of cattle. Many wonder if this localized devastation will have far-reaching effects.

“The devastating depth of this particular wildfire goes a step further and will affect you, too,” says Glenn Beck.

“Texas is the nation’s largest cattle state, and according to Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, 85% of the state’s cattle population lives in the Panhandle, where the fires occurred. ” he added.

In an interview with CBS, Miller predicted that 10,000 cows would die or have to be euthanized.

“While the number of lives lost in these fires is low, the loss of livelihoods is unlike anything we’ve seen before,” Glenn says.

Joe Leathers, general manager of the Four Six Ranch, which was affected by the fire, told Glenn it’s a “pretty devastating feeling.”

But he disagrees with Glenn’s assessment that others outside the area will be affected.

“Prices at the grocery store aren’t going to change anytime soon. There’s not going to be a shortage of beef,” Leathers says.

“It’s very devastating for people who lost their ranches, people who lost their homes, people who lost their livelihoods, people who lost all these cattle, but we lose a small number,” he said. explain. “We don’t see significant price increases at grocery stores.”
