Former Vice President Mike Pence criticized President Biden in an opinion piece Thursday night ahead of Biden’s 2024 State of the Union address.
inside Published an editorial in the Washington TimesMr. Pence, who has attended the annual addresses of three different presidents after serving as vice president and member of Congress, wrote that tonight he would watch Mr. Biden’s address to the nation from home.
“[A]And like many of my compatriots, I hope his words will be accompanied by meaningful action,” he wrote. “But history has taught us to temper our optimism regarding this administration’s promises.”
Biden is scheduled to address both houses of Congress at a critical moment as he prepares to face former President Trump in this fall’s general election.
Biden has faced growing opposition from Democrats over his handling of the Middle East war, and Republican lawmakers have already called for civility in his speeches after he heckled Biden several times during a speech last year. It is being
Pence accused Biden of using the State of the Union address to “sing the Republican paean” when he was actually hiding the truth about his “ultra-progressive” policies.
The former vice president also criticized Biden for his remarks in 2022, in which he said his plan was to address inflation. Pence claimed that Biden promised to address the government’s deficit in 2023, but failed to do so.
Pence wrote that he had “no doubt” that Biden would speak about “the importance of border security” as he has in past speeches. He called on Biden to reinstate policies he canceled, including the “Remain in Mexico” policy and “withdrawal powers like Title 42.”
“I urge him to move away from the empty promises and partisanship that have characterized his speeches thus far,” he wrote. “The American people deserve not just lofty rhetoric, but action to match his words.”
“Like millions of Americans, I don’t believe this president will be able to get the job done, but for the sake of our country, I hope he can get it done,” he concluded.
