House Republicans and dozens of House Democrats want the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take illegal aliens like Jose Antonio Ybarra, who is accused of kidnapping and killing Laken Riley in Athens. Passed the Laken-Reilly Act, which required detention. Georgia.
On February 22, 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley was found murdered in a wooded area on the University of Georgia campus after a morning run. The next day, Ibarra, a native of Venezuela, was arrested and charged with murder.
Months before Riley’s murder, Ybarra was cited in Athens on a shoplifting charge and later served with a bench warrant for failure to appear on that charge. Despite the charges, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not take him into custody.
The Laken Riley Act, introduced by Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.), would require DHS to detain illegal aliens arrested, charged, or convicted of crimes such as robbery, theft, theft, and shoplifting. It is mandatory.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana): “Innocent Americans from Laken Riley in Georgia to 14-year-old rape victims by illegal immigrants in their home state of Louisiana.” Said Before the bill was enacted. “They’re all being victimized by people that the Biden administration is releasing into our country. Ybarra first arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in September 2022 and was released into the U.S. interior thanks to Biden’s parole pipeline. Lawmakers estimate that millions of illegal aliens have been released into the U.S. interior under Biden’s watch.

In August 2023, Ybarra was arrested and charged with injuring a child in the sanctuary city of New York City. He was released from jail before ICE officials ordered Ybarra to be detained.
Then, in October 2023, Ybarra was cited for shoplifting approximately $200 worth of merchandise from a Walmart in Athens. In December 2023, a warrant for Mr. Ybarra’s arrest was issued after he failed to appear in court on charges.
