This is one way to start a WCC tournament.
The Pepperdine men’s basketball team defeated No. 9 seed Pacific University in the tournament opener on Thursday, then mocked its opponent on social media.
The Waves’ 102-43 victory set a new WCC tournament record for margin of victory, and Pepperdine was clearly in control by the end of the first half, scoring 56 points while giving up only nine.
The Waves’ 59-point victory broke the 40-point record set by Gonzaga in 2000.
CBS College Hoops Insider Jon Rothstein described Thursday’s match as a “Sonny Corleone at the Tollbooth” type beatdown.
Rothstein wasn’t the only one making jokes after the match, Pepedine’s account on X also joined the fray.
“Is Gonzuga like this every night?” written by the team.
Gonzaga, a member of the WCC, typically beats conference opponents during the regular season, defeating Pacific 102-76 on February 17th.
This win certainly made Pepperdine’s social media managers feel themselves, as the team account posted several other posts that caught the attention of users on X.
“Pepperdine Basketball’s Social Administrator is spending the night.” someone wrote.
This will be Pepperdine coach Lorenzo Romar’s last tournament at the helm after six seasons at the helm, after his retirement was announced earlier this week.
A search for his replacement is underway.
“Pepperdine has benefited greatly from Lorenzo Romar’s leadership on and off the court, and we are grateful to him for his love for our players, our basketball program, and our university. We have,” said Tim Perrin, senior vice president. Strategic implementation.
Pepperdine next faces the University of San Diego on Friday night.
