Copenhagen Consensus Chairman Björn Lomborg talks about promoting electric vehicles and its huge impact on the US
Rivian’s electric vehicle lineup continues to expand to include product lines you might not have expected.
Two midsize SUV product lines, the R2 and R3, will be part of the EV maker’s consumer offering alongside the existing R1T and R1S, although the latter of the new platforms was previously unannounced. Rivian said the surprise line includes the R3 midsize crossover and its performance variant, the R3X.
“We’ve never been more excited about a new product launch. R2 and R3 are distinctly Rivian in performance, features, and ease of use, but at a price point that makes them accessible to many.” CEO RJ Scaringe said in a statement.

Rivian described the newly announced R2 as a “midsize SUV that offers a combination of performance, capability and practicality in a five-passenger package optimized for big adventures and everyday use.” Starting price is $45,000.

The EV maker says the R2 will begin being available to consumers within the first six months of 2026. Meanwhile, the company has already opened up the option to U.S. customers to reserve one of its midsize SUVs.

Rivian said it will not begin offering R3 and its performance versions until after R2 “to ensure a smooth launch and quick ramp-up” of R2. The company says that when the R3 debuts, it will be priced lower than midsize SUVs.

The R3X is said to have “even more dynamic capabilities on and off-road” than its sister R3.
Rivian said the R2 and R3 vehicles can reach 60 mph in less than three seconds with the “fastest powertrain configuration.” His three options available include single motor, dual motor, and tri motor.

Consumers considering both types of mid-sized platforms can choose between two battery sizes. Rivian says even larger vehicles with a range of more than 300 miles will be able to charge with both NACS and CCS plugs.
