Former President Donald Trump told CNBC’s Squawk Box on Monday that a ban on TikTok would benefit Facebook, the “enemy of the people.”
Co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin said, “It looks like you’ve reversed your views on banning TikTok. Why?”
President Trump said, “So I did it. And Congress said, ‘They never fail, they usually fail in the end, you know, they’re very political.’
He went on to say, “But you know, I was at a stage where I could do it if I wanted to. And frankly, there’s a lot of people who like TikTok. There’s a lot of young kids on TikTok who would be hooked on it without it. There’s a lot of users. TikTok has a lot of people who like it. There’s a lot of good and a lot of bad. But what I don’t like is that Facebook can be big without TikTok. And I think Facebook, like much of the media, is the enemy of the people. I’m thinking, “What Facebook did with the lockbox, what Zuckerberg did with the $500 million lockbox. So, I thought it was illegal.”
He added: “They are doing business with China, and if China wants something from them, they will give it.” So it’s also a national security risk. But when you think about it, I’m not trying to make Facebook twice his size. If you ban TikTok, Facebook, etc., Facebook will be the main beneficiary. And I think Facebook has been very fair and very bad for our country, especially when it comes to elections. ”
