Nikki Haley received more than 77,000 votes in Georgia’s Republican primary despite withdrawing from the race following last week’s Super Tuesday.
The former South Carolina governor received 77,761 votes (about 13.2% of the vote) in Georgia’s Republican presidential primary, according to Decision Desk Headquarters. Haley withdrew from the race last week after failing to defeat former President Trump in all but two early primaries.
Trump easily won Tuesday night’s Georgia primary with about 84.5% of the vote. However, his level of support among moderates is likely to be a key factor in the general election.
Trump narrowly lost Georgia to current President Biden in the 2020 election by less than a quarter of a percentage point. Mr. Trump leads Mr. Biden by about 7.4 percentage points in Georgia, according to The Hill/Decision Desk Headquarters polling average.
Trump’s victory on Tuesday secured him enough votes to win the Republican presidential nomination. President Biden also became the presumptive Democratic nominee the same night after winning enough delegates in Tuesday’s primary.
Trump celebrated his nomination on social media.
President Trump: “On a really great day of victory, your favorite president is talking to you.” Said in a video his camp posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). “A week ago, we had what we call Super Tuesday, and it was just super, because we won by numbers that no one had ever seen before, records in virtually every state.”
