A California mother has been charged with orchestrating a nationwide shoplifting scheme that stole millions of dollars worth of cosmetics and clothing from hundreds of stores over more than a decade, according to the California Department of Justice.
According to a complaint filed by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a search warrant was served on Dec. 6, 2023, at the Bonsall apartment complex of Michelle Mack, 53, and Kenneth Mack. Dollars worth of cosmetics and other products were discovered.

Her group, which investigators have dubbed “California Girls,” operated in more than a dozen states and targeted at least 231 Lenscrafters, Sephora and at least Alta stores, according to NBC San Diego.

“The rise in organized retail crime is impacting all retailers, consumers and communities, and we believe it is important to take steps to stop the criminals who perpetuate this problem. Organized retail crime not only jeopardizes the safety of employees and customers, but also results in potentially dangerous or damaged products being resold online to consumers under false pretenses. “This will happen,” the spokesperson said. “We continue to work closely with authorities to reduce the incidence of retail theft that impacts not only our stores but retail stores across the country.”
