A man was killed after being pinned between two vehicles during a road rage incident on the Cross Bronx Expressway last week.
According to police, the altercation occurred around 9:30 a.m. during the morning rush hour on March 5 on the freeway near Jessup Street.
videoThe photo, which appears to have been taken by another driver, shows the moment a BMW SUV swerved diagonally across the lane and blocked the minivan.
The driver of the BMW then exited his vehicle, walked around to the driver’s side window of the minivan, appeared to say something, then reached into the window and struck the minivan driver.
The driver of the BMW then stomped his feet and returned to his car, while the driver of the minivan threw an object at the BMW.
The driver of the BMW then returned from his vehicle and walked again to the window of the minivan, where the driver reached out and grabbed him by the shirt.
The pair appeared to exchange further angry words before the driver of the BMW climbed through the window of the minivan and began punching the driver.
Video shows other cars passing by and slowing down to take in the sights of the fighting.
The driver of the BMW eventually opened the minivan’s door and continued assaulting the man behind the wheel.
The man in the BMW eventually returned to his vehicle, but the other driver jumped out of the minivan and attempted to get into the back seat of the other vehicle.
However, the BMW sped away, trapping the minivan driver between the two cars.
The driver of the minivan suffered serious injuries, including a broken collarbone, police said.
Investigators say the drivers of both cars have been identified as New Jersey residents, but it is unclear whether the man in the BMW is the same owner.
Police said the driver of the minivan, a 66-year-old Asian man, told police he may not be interested in pursuing charges.
Police became aware of the incident after a tip from Crimestoppers.
“The victim himself never reported it,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney told reporters at a news conference Tuesday.
“We have contacted the victim and identified him by his license plate…but at this point he is unsure whether to file criminal charges,” Kenney said.
He added that the prosecutor’s office can file charges even without the victim’s cooperation.
The video was shared on X by former New York City Council candidate Ying Tan, who said the angry exchange went viral on Chinese social media.
