The family of a high school student victim of a horrific attack has revealed her identity and the extent of her injuries, while the community steps in with financial support.
Video of the brutal attack near Hazelwood East High School in Missouri made headlines across the country and left many outraged on social media. Video showed the teenager repeatedly slamming the victim’s head into concrete on Friday. The 16-year-old victim appeared to have a seizure after the attack.
St. Louis County police said they arrested a 15-year-old suspect Saturday but did not release his identity because of his age.
Two GoFundMes account The victim’s family provided an update and identified her as Kaylee Gein. The veracity of the account was as follows. Confirmed by KSDK-TV by family.
Gein is reportedly in critical condition due to injuries such as brain hemorrhage and swelling.
One of the GoFundMe accounts says: “We won’t know the extent of the brain damage until she wakes up, but the road to recovery will be extremely difficult for her family, not just mentally but financially. “Deaf,” he said.
The page said Gein’s parents were by her side day and night.
A message from the family said: “We are deeply grateful to the wonderful medical staff who worked tirelessly to give her the best possible chance of a full recovery.” “We know she has a very long road ahead of her, but we still have hope for her. We are so overwhelmed with all the support and love. Thank you!”
Two GoFundMe accounts have raised more than $150,000 for the family.
The suspect is being held in St. Louis County Family Court on assault charges.
A friend of the victim said she was encouraged to “fight back” after being bullied before the terrifying attack.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey said the suspect should be tried as an adult, adding that if Gein does not survive his injuries, he should be charged with murder.
“This evil and complete disregard for human life has no place in Missouri or anywhere. I pray for the victims,” he wrote.
The Hazelwood School District’s initial statement attributed the incident to bullying.
“It is a tragedy that children are injured,” the statement read in part. “Bullying and conflict in our communities is an issue that we all need to take ownership of and work towards solving for the benefit of our children.”
