Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (New York) calls on Israel to elect a new prime minister to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to move toward lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians through a two-state solution. Ta.

Schumer said on the Senate floor Thursday in what he called a major speech on the two-state solution that Netanyahu is one of four obstacles to the solution.

The majority leader said he believed “Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by putting his own political survival ahead of Israel’s best interests.”

Mr. Schumer and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Palestinians and radical right-wing Israelis in government and society who support and condone Hamas and its evil ways; [and] Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas” is another obstacle.

Schumer, who is Jewish, said Israeli elections are “the only way to allow for a healthy and open decision-making process about Israel’s future.” He added that he believes the majority of Israelis also recognize the need for government change.

Prime Minister Netanyahu rejected the two-state idea in January, insisting, “We will not compromise on Israel’s complete security control over all territory west of Jordan. This is contrary to the Palestinian state.”

The Palestinian Authority also reiterated its desire for territory in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, with Jerusalem as its capital.
