Congressman Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) is calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) to protect the Second Amendment in fiscal year 2024 spending.
In a letter signed by 31 other members of Congress, Clyde said funding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) could actually endanger legal gun ownership. He warned that it was being used to carry out the
The letter, owned by Breitbart News, says: “Today, we write to you to protect the Second Amendment in the next spending package from partisan and weaponized attacks by the CDC and NIH. This poses a real threat to the Biden administration.”

The letter includes examples of funds used by the CDC and NIH to promote gun control.
- $518,000 to “expand background checks” “to strengthen policy enforcement;
[and secure] Firearm Storage Requirements” and Michigan’s Gun Confiscation Laws. - $650,000 for “Firearm Prohibition and Waiver” research.

In the past, Congress has used the Dickey Amendment to block funding available to the CDC to promote gun control, and Clyde and his fellow House members are calling on Johnson to immediately implement the Second Amendment. They are calling for the use of the Dickey Amendment to protect the United States.
The letter to Chairman Johnson states, “We, the undersigned members of Congress, will not only include the Dickey Amendment in the fiscal year 2024 budgets for the CDC and NIH, but also block further funding for these anti-gun ‘research.’ We request that you do so. It is designed and intended to be used as a weapon against firearm owners and the Second Amendment we all hold dear. ”
