Legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said the Georgia judge’s criticism of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) in his ruling was a big deal for former President Trump because the case was “going nowhere.” He insisted it would be a “very good day.”
“Today was a very good day for Donald Trump. This incident is out of control,” Toobin told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Friday.
Georgia Judge Scott McAfee announced his long-awaited ruling Friday, ruling that Willis can continue prosecuting Trump in the election interference case as long as he removes the investigator with whom he had a romantic relationship from the case. .
Although Mr. McAfee did not completely disqualify Ms. Willis due to the potential conflict of interest, he did sharply criticize her previous conduct in court proceedings.
The judge criticized Willis’ public statements that suggested race may have been a factor in the defendants’ case about him and investigator Nathan Wade. McAfee raised the idea that she could be subject to a gag order because of her comments.
He also criticized the “unusual decision” to participate in interviews with authors of books about Trump’s prosecution and his former relationship with Wade.
Although not disqualified, Toobin said he believes it is “extremely unlikely” that Willis’ case against Trump and other co-defendants will go to trial before this fall.
“Think about it, there was another extortion case in Georgia, and it took a year to select the jury instead of going to trial,” he said. Highlighted by Mediaite. “This case will never be tried before the election.”
The judge’s ruling allows the case to proceed after either Willis or Wade steps aside. Shortly after McAfee’s decision was announced, Wade submitted his resignation. Still, Toobin said the incident was “embarrassing.”
Most of the other co-defendants in Trump and Willis’ case have pleaded not guilty to the charges. A trial date has not yet been set, and the defendants are pending various motions to dismiss the case.
“Fani Willis has endured all this time, but this lawsuit is going nowhere,” he said.
