I Agree with Schumer, But He and Biden Are Helping Hamas’ Strategy of Getting Palestinians Killed

On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” new york times Columnist David Brooks agrees with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)’s comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but says Hamas’ strategy is “to kill as many Palestinians as possible.” Therefore, he said that he should not have said such a thing. He expressed the hope that “the international community will crack down on Israel due to the subsequent outrages, and Israel will have to relent.” And Schumer’s comments, along with President Joe Biden’s comments about red lines with Israel, are influencing that strategy.

Brooks said, “I agree with everything he said about Bibi Netanyahu. I still think he shouldn’t have said it. He certainly… shouldn’t have said it that way. A. You can no longer try to interfere in the electoral process of another democracy, especially if you are a key player in American elections.”

He continued, “Secondly, I’m concerned about how Hamas perceives this. Therefore, Hamas’ strategy is to kill as many Palestinians as possible, and the ensuing outrage will cause the international community to To oppress Israel and hope that Israel has to give in. And they see Chuck Schumer doing that, and they already think that And, frankly, if you look at what President Biden said to Jonathan about red lines, the way he said it was a little vague. Was he against the Rafah invasion? Or were the Israelis only opposed if it did not actually improve their humanitarian record? But, as Israeli Defense Secretary Benny Gantz said, he opposed any kind of invasion of Rafah. If you’re fighting a fire, you can’t prevent just 80% of the fire from being extinguished. And a good portion of the hostages and Hamas forces are in Rafah. And if you let them win and they If we let it stay there, there will never be a two-state solution, because as long as Hamas is in power, there will never be a two-state solution. So my main concern is that It’s a dynamic on a spiritual battlefield that feels like Hamas is suddenly emboldened.”
