A Republican Senate candidate in northwest Ohio is targeting a seat held by a vulnerable Democratic incumbent in a race he says is a clash between the entrenched establishment and voters.
“People in my hometown have encouraged me to run for Congress for years,” Republican Ohio Rep. Derek Melin, 38, told Fox News Digital, while Democratic Rep. Marcy Capture holds He spoke about his decision to run for the seat. “I finally decided to pull the trigger. I’m a constitutional conservative. I believe our country is in trouble because the federal government is going outside of the scope of the Constitution and doing a lot of things that should be left to the states and governments. The premise of my campaign is that America is the greatest country in the history of the world, and I’m fighting to protect the American Dream for everyone in Northwest Ohio..”
Melin’s previous election victories in northwestern Ohio, home to Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, which Kaptur has represented since 1983, make him a strong candidate to challenge the 41-year Democratic incumbent. I believe we are in a favorable position. He once defeated a three-term incumbent for mayor of Waterville, Ohio, when he was 21 years old.
Generally, about 50% of the votes in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District come from Lucas County, where Melin and Capture are from. Melin told FOX News Digital that his ability to turn out votes in the county, which has historically been the key to his success in November, will be key to his success in November.

”[Kaptur] “Historically, we’ve seen a surge in representation in Lucas County, so it’s essential that we have a Republican in Lucas County who can stop her, which is why it’s important to run someone who lives here and has a proven track record of winning.” he said.
Melin told Fox News Digital that a “vast majority” of voters in his district agree with him on most policy issues, particularly on immigration, spending, taxes and energy policy.
”Mercy Capture is not fully aligned with our district, so voters will be looking to see if we have the resources to get our message across, and we will, It’s just that they are more in line with my position and Mercy Capture. ”
Melin, leader of the Ohio House Republican Caucus, explained that voters in the district want “real” candidates who will stand up to both parties.

”First, we must stop the invasion at our southern border,” Melin said. “We have to secure our borders. Second, we have to balance the budget. I’m going to push for a constitutional amendment that puts lawmakers in a box and forces them to do the right thing and balance the budget.” I believe. I have pledged not to raise taxes. Number three is, we have to take on and fight the political class in this country, the Democrats and the Republicans. We have to put term limits on our members. It is necessary to establish a new law and bring back bad and good members.
“Our founding fathers never intended for our government to keep people in Congress for 20 to 30 years, and in the case of Mercy Kaptur, 41 years. It wasn’t designed for them. They need to go home.”
When Ohioans head to the polls on Tuesday, March 19 to cast their votes in the Republican primary, Melin will be joining two other Republican candidates in the race, former state Rep. Craig Riedel and real estate agent Craig Riedel. He will be competing against broker Steve Lankenau.
